My First Post
About Me
Hello everyone, my name is Arturo Mireles. I'm a dual-partner student at Linn-Benton Community College and at Oregon State University. My current major is nutrition, with an emphasis in dietetics. I'm originally from Oxnard, California, but moved to Corvallis, Oregon in 2022 to start a new journey with my family. Some fun things I like to do in my free time are hanging out with friends, listening to music, going to the gym, and playing basketball (if my knees are healthy lol). Another cool fact about me is that I have two beautiful white German Shepherds named Tasha and BJ. The reason why I chose Linn-Benton Community College was to save some money for school and fully transfer to Oregon State University to achieve my goals. With my degree, I want to work with athletes on a collegiate level to ensure that their dietary needs are met and can use nutrition to improve their performance and recovery.
I think the most interesting thing that I want to learn about media and culture is how current media impacts societal beliefs and perception of others who take in media information. I think it's important to learn about this because it can influence behaviors in everyone.
Something that I would say that I'm very passionate about are my health goals. For me, I think setting myself health goals whether it be eating a little bit less, taking supplements, or taking care of myself in general is something that I hold close to myself.
Information I Consume
My three main sources of information would probably be YouTube, Instagram, and Google. I would consider these my "go-to" sources of information because I find these sources easily accessible and provides information from trusted sources. Instagram provides ways to tell if information that is presented is false or untrustworthy, which makes it easier to know if you're being fed false info. Google on the other hand, helps me find information regarding certain events, news, and provides many trustworthy outlets. YouTube can have inconsistencies when it comes to factual data or information being taken in by others, but just like Google, searching for creators that back their information up with research and sources can make this media outlet pretty trustworthy.
The topic of "deep fakes" presents a new type of misinformation that many people fall for. I would say I'm pretty worried about the misinformation that is being thrown out into the media world. I say this because misinformation can cause many people within our community and society to have mistrust in actual reliable sources and creates public confusion. For example, if there was a media outlet like TikTok that had creators providing false information about a new virus, or ways to prevent this new virus, it can jeopardize the lives of people. Ways that I ensure that the information that I intake is factual, is that I make sure the information is provided by a trusted source and to use other media sources to back it up. After I have concluded my deep dive, I can then use the info and present it to anyone like family or friends.
